Economy

The construction industry is an important player in the economy of South Africa.  According to the Department of Public Works the industry contributes 35% to the total gross domestic fixed investment and employs approximately 230 000 employees.  The South African Government is the single biggest construction client, making up to 40% and 50% of the entire domestic construction expenditure.

Driving around the majority of South African cities, it is easy to see that the construction industry is booming, and if the amount of work in the pipeline is anything to go by, it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.  With interest rates at a 24 year low, government spending on infrastructure delivery improving, and several projects such and the R 12 billion Gautrain in the pipeline, it is a little wonder that the FTSE/JSE Africa Construction & Building Materials Index has gained more that 63% in the last year.  The construction industry grew and annualized 6.2% in the second quarter of 2005, up from 5.1% in the first quarter.
